Las Vegas casinos have not had the best couple of years, and every time attendance can be increased even a little bit these days it is considered to be a victory. The casinos are hoping that Labor Day weekend brings gamblers from all across the country.

Casinos in Sin City have experienced a slow down since the World Series of Poker ended back in July. Thousands of poker players came into Las Vegas to try their luck at the WSOP, but they were gone as soon as the event was complete. Even with the fall and winter months approaching, now is as good a time as any for a spike in customers.

“Las Vegas has become more family friendly over the past couple of years, and that could help them this weekend,” said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. “With money tight, it is not like it used to be where spouses get away for the weekend. Now, families are planning more vacations together around these short holiday weekends.”

The expectation in Las Vegas is that almost 300,000 tourists will visit the area over Labor Day weekend. If that occurs, it would be an increase over the 182,000 that came to Sin City last year during Labor Day weekend. The prognostication, however, calls for these tourists to spend less than the visitors last year at this time.

The economy may have something to do with that. Nationally, the economy has not fully recovered from the economic recession, and some analysts believe that it will get worse before it gets better. Any further drop in the economy could be a disaster to both Las Vegas, and their East Coast counterpart, Atlantic City.

The two gaming meccas are both drawing never before seen competition from neighboring states. New Jersey has been impacted from competition much more than Nevada, but that could change as the economy worsens and lawmakers look for ways to fill budget deficits.

Overall, analysts expect that many more people throughout the US will be traveling than last year during this holiday weekend. If that prediction holds true, it could mean good news for casinos all across the country.
